Record viewing on Grand Final weekend

It was a big weekend for Australian TV with the broadcast of both the AFL and NRL grand finals on Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday’s AFL grand final in Melbourne had a massive 3.04 million Metropolitan viewers on Seven and Sunday night’s NRL Grand Final event was watched by a record metropolitan audience of 2.65 million viewers on Nine, breaking the previous record of 2.62 million viewers which was recorded back in 2014.

It’s a first for the Sharks who have never won a premiership in their 49-year history, and a new viewing record for Nine.

The weekend saw a combined national audience of 7.82 million Australians tuning in to watch two of the years most hyped up sporting events, which highlights the importance of live sport to free-to-air television.
